Foot Pain Q&A

What are some common causes of foot pain?

Your feet are complex structures comprised of many different bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, and other tissues. If an issue arises with any one of these components, foot pain can quickly follow.

Although a relatively small part of your body, your feet perform an essential role in your mobility. They are subjected to a wide range of strains throughout each day and literally carry the weight of your entire body. It should come as no surprise that foot pain is such a common complaint.

Some of the issues that can lead to foot pain include:

  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Corns and calluses
  • Hammertoe or mallet toe
  • Bone spurs
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Bunions
  • Diabetic neuropathy
  • Arthritis
  • Gout
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Overpronation
  • Overuse syndrome

This is far from a comprehensive list. There are a multitude of factors that can lead to significant foot pain.

What are foot fractures, and how are they treated?

A fracture is an injury to your bone tissue. A fracture can be a tiny crack in your bone or a break so traumatic that the ends of the bone pierce the surface of your skin.

A foot fracture can occur during a traumatic injury like a car crash or during athletic activity. You can even fracture your foot by dropping an item on it or simply stepping off a curb or step.

Treating a foot fracture begins by assessing the degree of damage. Some minor fractures will heal without any intervention and simply need a period of rest. In other cases, you might need a cast or a special boot to immobilize your foot to facilitate healing.

Serious fractures often require surgical repair. Dr. Sloan may need to use implanted screws, plates, or rods to hold the damaged bones in place until your body fuses the bone tissue back together.

What could be causing my heel pain?

Heel pain is a common complaint and can make it hard to go through your normal daily routines. Some of the common causes of heel pain include:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Fracture
  • Bursitis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Sprains and strains

In some cases, a program of gentle stretching is enough to reverse heel pain. Lifestyle changes like avoiding going barefoot and altering your exercise preferences can help, as well. Depending on the cause of your pain, medications, splinting, orthotic devices, and surgical intervention might be the right treatment path.
