Orthotics Q&A

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are special shoe inserts that alleviate foot and ankle conditions. Though you can purchase orthotics at your local sporting goods store or pharmacy, over-the-counter orthotics may not address your specific foot or ankle needs.

Dr. Sloan of Lake Pointe Foot & Ankle has training in biomechanics, which is a rarity in the field of podiatry. Biomechanics assesses your gait, which includes how your feet turn when you walk or run.

Alterations in your gait affect your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and back. They may also affect athletic performance and increase your risk of injury.

Dr. Sloan’s training allows him to create custom-made orthotics that fit your foot and address your unique needs.

Lake Pointe Foot & Ankle is a full-service podiatry practice, and Dr. Sloan uses an advanced 3D foot scanner to create your orthotics.

Who benefits from orthotics?

Anyone suffering from foot or ankle pain may benefit from orthotics. Common conditions Dr. Sloan treats with orthotics include:

  • Diabetic foot problems
  • Foot or ankle pain
  • Heel pain
  • Leg pain
  • Fallen arches
  • Arthritis pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Hammertoes
  • Bunions

Custom-made orthotics may help reposition the structures in your feet, which may help redistribute your body weight and alleviate pain in your knees, hips, or lower back.

For people with diabetes, Dr. Sloan creates custom-made orthotics that reduce the formation of corns and calluses. They protect the foot and may prevent foot injuries that increase the risk of infection and more serious complications, like ulcers or even amputation.

What happens during an evaluation for orthotics?

When you visit Lake Pointe Foot & Ankle for an orthotics evaluation, Dr. Sloan performs a comprehensive history and physical to fully understand your needs and concerns.

During your evaluation, he reviews your health history, foot and ankle problems, and general areas of pain and discomfort. He evaluates your feet and ankles, as well as your biomechanics, to assess your gait and weight distribution.

To confirm or rule out a foot or ankle condition, Dr. Sloan may request in-office X-rays, ultrasound testing, or a vascular study. He then uses the advanced 3D scanner to scan your feet and create your custom-made orthotics.

Once your orthotics are ready, he has you return to the office for a fitting and makes adjustments as needed. He may also suggest specific footwear to support your orthotics, alleviate foot and ankle pain, and improve foot and ankle health.

He schedules regular follow-up appointments to monitor your symptoms and make changes to your orthotics as needed.
